Each day I walked past La Lonja, I felt intrigued by the thought of, one day, portraying these men of the sea in Tintype: a photographic technique from the 1840’s.
A stroke of fate granted me the incomparable experience of joining the fishermen on open waters. It was an encounter charged with emotions and adrenaline, setting off from the marina at 3:00 in the morning, watching them risk their lives at high seas. It was us, the darkness, the roaring of the sea and the constant rocking of waves. Witnessing the fishermen practice a disappearing trade, traditional fishing which is so intricately linked with the sustainability of our seas, was deeply moving. The depth of this experience awakened in me the desire to pay tribute to the lives of the fishermen, to those who work in La Lonja, in Palma de Mallorca.
My contribution to this homage, are their portraits frozen in time on an indestructible sheet of steel so that these images may stay etched into our collective memory. A celebration of imperfection and authenticity.
I want to express my gratitude to these men, for so generously gifting me their time and trust, thus allowing me to portray them in these unique prints.
